Hamburger Potato Casserole (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ For the Casserole

01 - 4 lbs russet potatoes, cleaned and sliced to 1/4 inch thick
02 - 1 lb ground beef
03 - 1 lb Italian sausage
04 - 1 medium sweet onion, diced
05 - 4 cloves garlic, minced

→ For the Sauce

06 - 2 cans cream of chicken soup
07 - 1 1/2 cups milk
08 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
09 - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
10 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
11 - 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

→ For Topping

12 - 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

# Instructions:

01 - In a large skillet over medium heat (or use the sauté function of your crockpot if it has one), add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Brown on each side, breaking it up as it cooks. Add the diced onions and minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
02 - Transfer the meat mixture to your crockpot. Add the cream of chicken soup, milk, and all the seasonings - salt, pepper, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Stir everything together with the meat, then add the sliced potatoes. Toss everything together, making sure to submerge the potatoes into the liquid as much as possible.
03 - Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Give it a stir and make sure the potatoes are nestled under the liquid. Top with the shredded cheese and keep cooking until the potatoes are fork tender - about 1 to 2 more hours.
04 - Serve warm and enjoy this hearty, comforting casserole!

# Notes:

01 - Slice the potatoes to 1/4 inch for the slow cooker - they need to be a bit thicker so they don't turn to mush.
02 - You can also make this in the oven! See the notes section for full oven instructions with slightly adjusted ingredient amounts.
03 - If your crockpot has a sauté function, you can brown the meat right in it to save on dishes.
04 - Stir the casserole partway through cooking to make sure everything cooks evenly.
05 - This is perfect for a set-it-and-forget-it dinner on busy days!
